Stage 1

The Lucky Corner's notes for Fishy Tales and Three Smart Boys place Stage 1 at Hal E. Roach Studios. They summarize studio paperwork and daily film reports. Those notes do not give the stage a floor size or a height.

Three Smart Boys was filmed from 15 to 19 February 1937. The studio documentation indicates that Stage 1 was used, with perhaps a bit of last-day footage shot on Stage 2. On 16 February the exterior barn set and the interior veterinary's office set were both on Stage 1. The production sheet records the four boys and Sidney Bracey working on Stage 1 that day. On 17 February the interior veterinary's office set was scheduled on Stage 1.

Night 'N' Gales was filmed from 22 to 30 June 1937. Most of the sets were on Stage 2. The living room set was apparently on Stage 1, though one of the documents places it on Stage 2. On the first day of shooting, the interior living room and hall sets were scheduled on Stage 1.

Fishy Tales was filmed from 26 July to 2 August 1937 and released on 28 August 1937. Almost the entire film was shot on Stage 4. The scene in front of Butch's house was shot on Stage 1. The daily film report for 29 July 1937, the fourth day of shooting, records that the exterior Butch's house set on Stage 1 was filmed that day.

Three Men in a Tub was filmed from 9 to 18 February 1938. The process shots were shot on Stage 1. On 14 February 1938, process shooting of the exterior lake set took place on Stage 1.

On 15 February 1937, the first shooting day of Three Smart Boys, the call sheet scheduled the exterior barn set on Stage 1, with the exterior school and interior office sets on Stage 4. The production sheet for that day places the entire day's work on Stage 1. It lists the five regular children, Rosina Lawrence, one bit woman, nine extras, and a school teacher. On 18 February the four main boys and two bit players worked on Stage 1. On 19 February the schedule put the interior veterinary office on Stage 2, while the production sheet still names the four boys on Stage 1.

On 18 February 1938, the last day of Three Men in a Tub, process shooting of the exterior lake set took place on Stage 1. Alfalfa, Porky, Buckwheat, Darla, and Darwood were present, and Spanky did not work. The Lucky Corner notes that most of the process shots were finished that day, after very little of that footage had been completed on 14 February.

The exterior Butch's house set on Stage 1 was on the call sheet for 28 July 1937, the third day of Fishy Tales, along with yard and barn sets on Stage 4. The daily film report for that day records the exterior barn, the interior barn, and the exterior fence, and not the Stage 1 set. The report for 29 July records that the delayed Stage 1 footage was shot that day.

Stage 1 was used again for television. On Monday morning, 21 May 1951, cameras rolled on Stage 1 at Hal Roach Studios for The Abbott and Costello Show. The Abbott and Costello Fan Club stated that date on 21 May 2021, in its report of the restoration announced by archivist Bob Furmanek with TCA Television Corp. and the Lou Costello Estate. The same day, Furmanek wrote on the Blu-ray.com forum that the company was at work on stage number 1 at the Hal Roach Studios.
