Administration
The administration building of Hal Roach Studios stood on the lot at 8822 West Washington Boulevard, at the corner of Washington Boulevard and National Boulevard in Culver City.
Marc Wanamaker, writing for the Culver City Historical Society, records that by April 1920 the studio consisted of the administration building on Washington Boulevard, one large open stage and an enclosed stage, a set storage building, a laboratory, and department bungalows.
A film negative by Bob Plunkett, held by the Huntington Library, shows the Hal Roach Studios Inc. building at 8822 West Washington Boulevard from the street, with automobiles parked at the curb.
The Huntington catalog dates that negative only approximately, and notes, citing Richard Lewis Ward, A History of the Hal Roach Studios, page 99, that in the late 1930s the administration building was renovated and a two-story portico was added.
Martin Turnbull, describing an aerial photograph of 8822 Washington Blvd. that he dates to about the 1950s, notes a long administration building facing Washington Boulevard.
Wanamaker writes that the studio closed in April 1959 because of bankruptcy, was permanently closed by December 1962, and was demolished in August 1963 after several auctions and sales of the company assets.
In 1980, Wanamaker notes, the site was marked with a historical plaque as one of the city’s most famous and important studios.
